The 12 Year Plan to End Torture

The movement to eliminate torture in our time

Every day, throughout the world, mothers, fathers, sons and daughters are arbitrarily detained, tortured and denied access to counsel and basic due process rights - causing untold human suffering, perpetuating patterns of violence and impunity, and sapping vast economic potential. Most tragically these abuses typically occur as a matter of routine, with no material gain for the horrible injustice being wrought.

This torture and abuse can be stopped. After years of working with defenders alongside their courageous efforts and devastating setbacks, we have seen that when certain pieces are in place, investigative torture stops.

What's more, we find ourselves in a unique moment in time – one that is ripe for bringing about the change we need. Recent political upheavals have uncovered dark practices that have heightened global outrage and inspired governments to get ahead of the problem.

Investigative torture must end now. It can end now. The timing is right. The solutions are in our hands.

To learn about the specific pieces that need to be in place – and how we will put them there – read the HIGHLIGHTS of our 12 year plan to end investigative torture and ensure due process rights.
