“Detainees face great difficulty in knowing their procedural and constitutional rights from the moment of arrest, which makes them vulnerable to serious violations”

About Alaa

Alaa Al-Hussein is a defense lawyer and a legal advisor. Through her work, Ms. Al-Hussein has seen how detainees who are unaware of their procedural and constitutional rights from the moment of arrest, are highly vulnerable to rights violations. She believes that the rule of law and respect for fundamental rights are essential to justice and accountability. She is a lawyer at the Free Aleppo Bar Association, an investigator at the Commission for International Justice and Accountability, and she has worked with IBJ in the past. Outside her work, she engages in issues of civil peace and works with local civil society organizations to understand the challenges that local communities face.

The Challenge

Ms. Al-Hussein finds that the limited public awareness of legal rights in society makes access to justice difficult. Thus, many individuals remain vulnerable to violations.

The Innovation: Ensuring Justice

The project provides legal awareness workshops in Aleppo for citizens and detainees, practical training for police and judicial staff, and develops written and visual materials to clarify rights and legal procedures. By ensuring that men, women, and children understand their rights from the moment of detention and by training justice actors to respect these rights, the initiative strengthens early access to legal representation and fair-trial guarantees. Her project emphasizes gender equality by promoting inclusive participation and offering tailored support for women and girls, aiming for at least 50% of participants in trainings and sessions to be female.
