Quote

“The main idea is to ensure that men, women, and children accused receive legal advice as soon as possible after being arrested, which is a critical step in ensuring their justice and protection from any legal or rights violations that may occur”

About Thamer

Thamer Houmad is a defense lawyer with more than 5 years of experience. He is committed to protecting vulnerable individuals and promoting justice. He has worked as a legal professional at Ataa Humanitarian Relief Association and other NGOs. His interests center on promoting legal education and ensuring that defendants are informed about their rights so they can navigate the legal system more efficiently.

The Challenge

Mr Houmad finds that accused citizens may face refusals or delays in obtaining qualified defense lawyers, which undermines their right to a fair legal process. He further identifies that due to gender inequality within the criminal justice system, there is inadequate legal representation and protection for women in accessing justice.

Innovation: True Legal Protection

Mr Houmad’s project seeks to improve early access to legal representation for defendants in the countryside of southern Aleppo. The initiative focuses on providing legal representation and raising awareness through direct visits and legal sessions. By informing defendants of their basic rights and increasing their legal knowledge, the project helps reduce fear, uncertainty, and mistrust in the justice system. Early access to a lawyer helps prevent violations that can occur during arrest, interrogation, or early legal proceedings. In the short term, the project aims to ensure early legal representation to defendants and strengthen the understanding of basic rights. In the long term, it seeks to expand public awareness, support crime prevention, and contribute to a more just and informed community.
