“My motivation comes from my strong belief in social justice and supporting vulnerable groups, especially children and women.”

About Ibrahim

Ibrahim Naif bin Khaled is a defense lawyer with more than 15 years of experience in protecting vulnerable groups, including women, children, and marginalized individuals. He is a member of the Free Aleppo Bar Association since 2010, and he is a founding member of the Free Syrian Bar Association. He has experience handling cases where people lacked legal guidance or the ability to defend themselves. Mr Khaled has worked with IBJ on initiatives aimed at strengthening the rights of the accused and promoting early access to a defense lawyer.

The Challenge

Mr Khaled highlights that the lack of legal knowledge among both citizens and government employees has two main consequences: firstly, it limits individuals’ ability to assert their rights and to navigate the justice system effectively, and secondly, governmental employees may unknowingly commit violations.

The Innovation: Achieving Transitional Justice

Mr Khaled’s project combines direct legal consultations with community engagement and awareness sessions in Aleppo. The project aims to ensure that detainees, vulnerable individuals, and the general public understand their rights from the earliest stage of interaction with the criminal justice system. This approach goes beyond theoretical knowledge by providing legal guidance and immediate access to legal support. The initiative focuses on vulnerable groups, particularly women and minors, who often face barriers in accessing justice. Tailored sessions address their specific needs, ensuring that gender and age considerations are accounted for. Additionally, the project bridges the gap between citizens and justice-sector actors through roundtable discussions that bring these actors together.
