International Bridges to Justice values every individual’s right to privacy and we take your privacy seriously. Please read this Privacy Policy carefully to understand how we will treat your personal data, how you can access and update such information, as well as make certain choices about how such information is used.
This Privacy Policy applies to all personal data that you disclose to us and that we collect. It covers both our online and offline data collection activities, including personal data that you disclose to us through our Platforms (i.e., our website, E-Learning and other online platforms, and mobile applications), and related to our programs, projects, competitions, initiatives and campaigns (collectively all online and offline data collection activities are referred to as the “Services”). Please note that we might aggregate your personal data from different sources (offline events and our Platforms) and from different devices; as a part of this, we combine personal data that was originally collected from these different sources.
This policy takes into account both the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection and the European Union General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The data processing activities described in this policy are conducted by International Bridges to Justice, a Swiss association and non-governmental organization (“IBJ”), as data controller.
What Personal Data We Collect
Personal data is any information that can be used to identify or contact you. Depending on how we interact with you (online, offline, over the phone, etc.) our systems collect only the personal data that we need and can legitimately use. Based on your relationship with us, our website or other systems may collect information such as your name, address, phone number, email, gender, bank account details, credit card details, social media account presence, professional background, and education details. Our online services may also collect some anonymized personal data that does not identify you such as your browser type, Internet Protocol (“IP”) address, and files downloaded from and pages visited on our Platforms.
Sensitive Personal Data
In some cases, such as when you (or someone on your behalf) requests assistance through one of our projects or programs, or in an employment context when considering you for a specific role, special categories of information, such as racial or ethnic origin, political opinions, religious beliefs, health information, sexual orientation, and information relating to criminal convictions or offenses may be collected. We will only collect sensitive data about you if there is a proper and legal reason to do so.
Personal Data of Children
We understand that youth are a driving factor for change throughout the world and we seek to encourage that passion and energy through our youth initiative. If you are between the ages of 13 and 18 and would like to get involved with us through our youth initiative, as a volunteer or in any other way, please make sure that you have your parent or guardian’s permission before giving us your personal information. We do not direct our Services to anyone under the age of 13 and we do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under this age; please do not submit any personal information on our Platforms if you are under the age of 13.
If you are under the age of 18 and seek our assistance in protecting your legal rights through one of our programs or projects, you must ask your parent or legal guardian to submit the request on your behalf.
How We Collect Your Personal Data
The type of personal data our systems collect and store depends on how you interact with us. Our systems might collect information from you, both directly and indirectly, as well as from third parties and public sources.
Information that you might provide directly
You may provide information to us directly when you:
- Register for, use, view or contribute to our Platforms;
- Register for or attend one of our events, trainings, or forums;
- Sign a pledge or petition or respond to or participate in one of our campaigns, initiatives, or competitions;
- Make a donation to us;

Our websites use cookies, to improve your experience (for example, keeping you logged in), and to understand how our Platforms are being used. Additionally, we may use cookies to remember your choices (like your language preferences), to provide a safer experience, and otherwise to customize our Platforms for you. Information collected from third parties:
If you interact with us via a social media platform such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, or Twitter, our social media accounts may receive information about you from these sources. Depending on your privacy settings, information such as your name, profile picture, friends list, IP address, unique ID for the social media platform and email address may be shared with our accounts. Additionally, data may be shared with us by fundraising sites like “gofundme” who do so only with your consent when you choose to support us. Further, in some cases it is necessary for us to collect information about you from third parties such as information obtained from prior employers in conjunction with a check of personal references prior to employment.
We also use third party digital communication services such as Campaign Monitor, MailChimp, Salesforce and Google analytics to assist us with marketing and fundraising. These companies may have limited access to your personal data (such as email address) only to the extent necessary to perform their work on our behalf. Information collected by them (through processing of donations and tracking of email recipient activity and Platform usage) is used to improve communication with our donors and potential supporters, improve our Services and process donations.

Information collected from publicly available sources
We may combine personal data that you provide to us with information available from public databases and websites (which may include websites of media organizations and government websites). An example would be to double check a mailing address for a thank you letter. We do this in order to better understand those who support us, ensure our goals are compatible and to focus our requests for support.
Use of Personal Data
We use your information for a number of important purposes, depending on your relationship to us, including but not limited to:
- Providing and operating our programs and projects, as well as trainings, forums and other events in support thereof;
- Operating, managing and improving our Platforms, including any interactive featuressuch as forums on the Platforms;
- Creating and managing your account and enabling user-to-user communications on the Platforms;
- Determining the effectiveness of our Services, promotional campaigns and advocacy efforts and reporting on this to our partners;
- Writing advocacy statements and/or documentation to promote you (if you are a participant in a program, project, initiative, or competition) and/or our work;
- Seeking participation for advocacy campaigns and forwarding petitions that you have signed to advocacy targets;
- Sending out newsletters, and marketing materials or contacting you in the context of our advocacy work, fundraising activities or providing our Services;
- Conducting fundraising research, and seeking and processing donations;
- Reviewing job, internship, and/or volunteer applications;
- For our business purposes, such as data analysis, audits, monitoring and prevention of fraud, and other potential misuse of our Services, addressing technical issues, sending administrative information, and modifying or expanding our organizational activities; and
- Ensuring compliance with any laws and fulfilling any legal obligations.
In addition to those purposes listed above, we may use your information for any other purpose disclosed to you at the time of collection or that you have previously authorized.
Basis for Processing Your Information
The most relevant ways allowed under current law for the how we collect and use your personal data include if you have given us consent, or if the processing is necessary 1) for the performance of a contract (for example, to process a donation), 2) to comply with a relevant legal obligation (relating to employment, financial reporting and other regulatory compliance purposes), or 3) for the performance of a task carried out in the public interest (for example, increasing access to justice, preventing violations of human rights or improving criminal justice systems).
We may also process your personal data for our legitimate interest, while also respecting your fundamental rights and freedoms. Some of our legitimate interests include 1) management and administration (including providing information on our work, research, operating our programs and projects, data analysis, and the administration of interns and volunteers); and 2) recruitment and fundraising (including managing financial or advocacy campaigns, sending event invitations, and sending direct marketing and thank you letters by post).
Data protection law provides additional ways under which we are allowed to process sensitive personal data if you have given consent, and in most cases this is necessary for the establishment, exercise or defense of legal claims (for example, you are provided legal assistance through one of our programs).
Consent to Use
You can withdraw your consent to process such personal data at any time by emailing us at internationalbridges@ibj.org.
Storage of Personal Data
We may transfer or store your personal data in paper files as well as on secure servers at our offices (Swiss headquarters or locally at country offices), off-site and on cloud-based servers. Third party suppliers may also process or store some of the personal data you provide to us and these suppliers may conduct their work in other locations. Any of these processing or storage locations (either ours or a third party suppliers) may be outside of your area and the data protection laws may differ from where you live. In such cases, we will make efforts to ensure appropriate protections are in place to safeguard your personal data in accordance with applicable data protection laws.
Security
The security of your personal data is very important to us and we take appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your data from loss, or misuse. For example, we monitor our network against data breaches and utilize industry standard SSL (secure sockets layer) certificates. We also take care to restrict employee access to your data on a need-to-know basis so as to safeguard your personal data as much as reasonably possible. Please remember that no method of transmission over the Internet or by other means nor any method of electronic storage is completely secure. While we take appropriate precautions to protect personal data, we cannot guarantee its absolute security.
Retention of Personal Data
Generally, we retain your data for as long as reasonably necessary to fulfill the purpose for which is was collected or as legally required. For example, should you provide your contact details to create an account on our Platforms, this personal data would be retained until you delete your account. When it is no longer required, we will ensure that your personal data is disposed of in a secure manner. If you choose at any time, however, that you do not want us to keep your personal data, please email us at internationalbridges@ibj.org stating clearly that you would like us to dispose of your data. If you request to receive no further contact from us, we’ll keep some basic information about you on our suppression list to avoid sending you unwanted materials in the future. Such information will be minimized to ensure we only keep what is necessary.
Personal Data that You and We Share
You share your information as you use and communicate through our Platforms. If you register on any of our Platforms and submit your personal data to create an account, other registered users may see your user name. Additionally, by posting information and materials on our Platforms’ interactive features (such as forums) as well as by creating your profile page on the Platforms you, yourself, may disclose your personal data to third parties.
We will never sell your personal data to another organization; however, we may share your personal data within our IBJ offices for the purposes described in this Policy.
We use third party service providers to facilitate or provide our Services, such as cloud-based servers, and to perform services such as technical support, data processing, marketing services, processing donations or to assist us in analyzing how our Platforms are used, such as Google Analytics. These third parties may have access to your personal data only to perform these tasks on our behalf and we will ensure that appropriate controls are in place to protect your personal data.
Individuals participating in or making a request for legal assistance through our programs and projects provide personal data, including sensitive categories of personal data in some cases. We then make such personal data available to one or more lawyers who have registered with us to provide legal services; this is necessary to allow the lawyers to directly contact you as you have requested. Further, if you are provided legal assistance through one of our projects or programs or choose to participate in our initiatives or competitions, we may wish to write and publish statements, articles, etc. specifically about your case to promote your cause and/or promote our own work. We will never use your name in these statements without your consent. Such texts may be published on our website which is accessible worldwide, sent to our partners and others who receive our information and be printed and shared in other ways.
Unsubscribing from Emails
If you no longer want to receive marketing-related emails from us, you may opt-out via the unsubscribe link included in such emails or by notifying us at internationalbridges@ibj.org stating clearly that you would like us to remove you from our email list. We will try to comply with your request(s) as soon as reasonably practicable.
Your Rights
You have certain rights under data protection law which you may exercise at any time. You have the right to request if your personal data is being processed and, if so, you may have the right to receive a copy of your personal data. You also have the right to request that your personal data be corrected, completed or erased, object to its processing or have access to it restricted.

Changes to This Privacy Policy

Changes are effective when they are posted on our website and your further use of our Services after a change to our policy will be governed by these new terms.
Language
In the future, this policy may be available in languages other than English. To the extent of any inconsistencies or conflicts between the English version of this policy and this policy available in another language, the English language version will control; any translations are non-binding and for reference only.
