marcosta_indonesia2010-9.jpgOne of the greatest organizational difficulties has been convincing the city that the villagers can negotiate collectively. Working with LBH Masyarakat, the village had begun to collect 3000 Rupiah a day (USD 30 cents) from each family for a communal fund. The money will serve as the down payment on their future apartment. It also acts as an important demonstration, both to the government and to the villagers themselves, that they can be responsible, organized and serious negotiation partners.
