The residents come from Western Java, where 30 years ago the lack of employment at home sent the first of them to Jakarta. Since that time, authorities have evicted the community twice, most recently in 2003. However, lack of employment and opportunity in the countryside keep them returning to the banks where they have learned to survive by supplying Jakarta’s many homes and restaurants with fish.
