Papa Amadou BA, MAURITANIA

Papa Amadou from Mauritania

“The strengthening of democracy and its corollary, civil liberties, depends on strict observance of civil and political rights.”

About Papa Amadou

Mr. Papa Amadou Ba holds a Bachelor’s degree in Law from the University of Nouakchott and a Master’s degree in Law from the University of Mauritania. He is currently the President of the Mauritanian Human Rights League (Ligue Mauritanienne des Droits de l’Homme).

The Challenge

In Mauritania, police officers and the general public often lack adequate training and awareness regarding human rights. This low level of awareness impedes individuals’ ability to exercise and defend their rights effectively. Additionally, human rights organizations in Mauritania face financial constraints that limit their ability to collaborate with justice stakeholders and enhance public knowledge. Papa Amadou’s project aims to address these issues by strengthening civil and political rights in Mauritania.

The Innovation: Civil and Political Rights Outreach in Mauritania

Through his JusticeMakers project, Papa Amadou plans to organize training sessions on civil and political rights for civil society organizations, host a Day of Reflection with the Ministry of Justice, conduct a comprehensive study of civil and political rights in Mauritania, and develop a Mauritanian civil and political rights handbook. This inclusive project is designed to catalyze a deeper understanding of civil and political rights across the country.
